LOCKPORT COUNCIL OKS DEAL TO COPY CANAL MURAL

The Common Council this week ratified a memorandum of understanding with the Niagara County Historical Society that $12,318 in state funds will be used to make a digital copy of the enormous mural of the opening of the Erie Canal that hangs in the Lockport High School auditorium.

The 1928 painting by A. Raphael Beck originally was to be moved to the new city visitor center to open June 1 in the Hamilton House, Church and Ontario streets, but that plan has been scrapped in favor of the digitization, Council President John Lombardi III said.

The Historical Society is to operate the canal museum and visitor center in the 163-year-old former church.
