'SUNSHINE ROOM' DEDICATED AS MEMORIAL TO OFFICER

The Cheektowaga Police Department has formally dedicated its newly redecorated "Sunshine Room."

The room is used by the Youth and Family Services Unit for conducting interviews when privacy is required and as a safe place for a younger sibling or child to wait while an older sibling or parent is being interviewed. The unit investigates all domestic violence incidents, missing persons and crimes committed by juveniles.

The room is named in honor of Detective Wasyl "Bill" Potienko, who was killed in a car accident while on duty in October 2002. Potienko's widow, Mary, decided to use all the contributions made to the family after her husband's death to help offset the cost of painting and furnishing the room. No town money was used for the project, which included new walls, furniture and toys.
