CRACKDOWN PLANNED OVER GARBAGE CONTAINERS

The Village of Blasdell plans to crack down on people who try to put more than 95 gallons of trash in their 95-gallon garbage containers, resulting in litter.

"Not all, but a lot of them, are renters with absentee landlords," Mayor Ernest J. Jewett said at Wednesday night's Village Board meeting.

He said the village is considering amending the ordinance so that repeat offenders would be forced to purchase an additional container, at a cost of $150 a year.

On another matter, the board is considering an overhaul of its adult use and entertainment ordinance.

Village Attorney James Shaw said during the work session that the current ordinance is very terse and doesn't cover a lot of uses. He said he is not aware of any plans for an adult facility but the idea is to make the ordinance more comprehensive in case one is proposed. It would continue to limit adult uses to industrial areas more than 1,000 feet from schools, churches or homes. Any changes would be subject to a public hearing.
