Stephania A. Gardon, a lifelong resident of Kaisertown, died Monday in ElderWood Village at Maplewood, Cheektowaga, after a month's illness. She was 103.
Mrs. Gardon was a self-taught seamstress and worked for M. Wile & Co. during the 1920s and '30s.
For 65 years, she sang in the choir at St. Casimir's Catholic Church. Later, she was delighted when a grandson, Thomas Witakowski, became choir director and organist.
Born Stephania Hala in Buffalo, she made it only to the sixth grade at St. Casimir's School but was an expert crossword puzzle fan who worked confidently in ink. She also enjoyed dressmaking, knitting and crocheting.
Her husband, Andrew, died in 1968.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Anne of Buffalo and Margaret Manista of Eden; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Casimir's Church, Weimar and Casimir streets. Prayers will be said at 9 in Buszka Funeral Home, 2005 Clinton St. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
