John S. Ferrara, a retired postal clerk, died Sunday at home under the care of Niagara Hospice after a brief illness. He was 80.
Born in Niagara Falls, he graduated from Niagara Falls High School and attended Millard Fillmore College. He studied photography at Niagara University and real estate at Niagara County Community College.
As a young man, he was a commercial artist.
Mr. Ferrara served in the Army during the Korean War from 1949 to 1951 and then spent five years in the Army Reserve and was discharged as a sergeant.
He was a clerk at the Post Office at Main Street and Walnut Avenue until retiring.
Mr. Ferrara was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
Survivors include a son, John J. of Niagara Falls; a daughter, Gloria of Amherst; his former wife, Arlene Swinford of Niagara Falls; three sisters, Nina Granite and Catherine Pane, both of Lewiston, and Jean Paone of Niagara Falls; and a grandson.
Prayers will be said at 9 a.m. Thursday in Zajac Funeral Home, 319 24th St., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 27th Street and Independence Avenue. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
