It is the popular opinion to characterize the East Side of Buffalo as a dangerous, downtrodden area devoid of any positive news. Unfortunately, some of this is true. Yet on Clark Street, one block from the Broadway Market, a miracle of sorts is occurring.
Led by the Rev. Anselm Chalupka, Corpus Christi Church is undertaking a renewal that is just short of amazing. The church, nearly closed a year ago, is drawing people from the far reaches of Western New York.
I have met Chalupka and it's easy to see why those drawn to his church range from college students, to former East Siders and their families to neighborhood residents. His energy to help those in need is what transforms areas devoid of hope.
Over the past year, 50 additional families have signed on to help preserve this treasure. If this magnificent church were in another city, people would be lining up to pay for tours to view its architecture. In Buffalo, it's free of charge for those willing to seek an experience that is enlightening.
