BYSTANDER WOUNDED IN SHOOTOUT IMPROVES

The condition of Amber Keller -- the innocent bystander who was wounded in a gunbattle between a Buffalo police officer and a convicted felon on April 7 -- has improved from critical to serious, hospital officials said today.

Keller had been listed in critical condition in the Erie County Medical Center since the shooting.

The 20-year-old Cheektowaga woman was shot in the head.

Officer Thomas P. English fired about four shots while returning fire from Mario J. Pittman, a convicted gun felon, during the incident on Genesee Street, near the Cheektowaga border, Buffalo police said.

Keller was staying with a friend who lives on Genesee when she was wounded. Police suspect she was hit by one of the officer's bullets that went through the home's window.
