The Holland Town Board has sent the Holland Speedway's request for a communications tower to the Planning Board.
The project, proposed by Nextel Corp., would include a 185-foot pole and a storage area for electrical equipment on a 125-square-foot parcel at the racetrack.
Ken O'Neill, a Nextel engineer, said the pole would improve reception and Nextel would make its equipment available to emergency services without charge.
Town Attorney Ronald Bennett, owner of the property, described the concept as a pilot program, the first of its kind in the state.
Supervisor Gordon Hessel Jr. noted the project does not meet federal height requirements.
Also, Cingular Wireless is seeking a permit for its own telecommunications tower.
