COUNCIL PICKS LAWYER AS INTERIM MAYOR

A lawyer with a family legacy of public service has been named interim mayor of this Southern Tier city.

The City Council tapped J. William O'Brien II on Friday to succeed Stephen Hughes, who resigned last month because of a conflict of interest with his new job at Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler counties. Both Elmira and Catholic Charities receive federal funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

O'Brien, 51, a Democrat who had been legal counsel for the villages of Elmira Heights and Wellsburg, will be mayor for nine months. He said he will not run for the post in November.

O'Brien's father, the late J. William O'Brien, spent more than 20 years in public life as a councilman and urban renewal director.
