John F. Christopher of the City of Tonawanda, a World War II veteran and retired New York Central Railroad employee, died Tuesday in Northgate Manor Health Care facility in Wheatfield after a long illness. He was 88.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Christopher lived in the City of Tonawanda for more than 40 years. He worked 46 years for the New York Central Railroad as a welder and foreman before his retirement in 1982.
Mr. Christopher served in the Army in Germany during World War II. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in the City of Tonawanda.
His wife, the former Marie E. Cummings, died in 1983.
He is survived by his son, John "Jack" of Acworth, Ga.; a sister, Rosemary Yanacek of the City of Tonawanda; a brother, Michael of Amherst; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, City of Tonawanda. Entombment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery Mausoleum, Town of Tonawanda.
