A McKoon Avenue man was arrested early Thursday after three patrol cars were smashed during a chase through city streets.
Police said a van sped off when they had tried to stop it on Hyde Park Boulevard. When they tried to block its path, the driver put the van into reverse, hit a patrol car, shifted back into drive and hit another patrol car.
Numerous city police cars chased the van along 27th Street before it was stopped at Niagara Street after hitting a third patrol car.
Police said the driver was subdued with a stun gun.
Joseph M. Gaines, 42, was charged with felony third-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest, three counts of failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to yield the right away to an emergency vehicle, driving without headlights, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated.
He was released after posting $1,500 bail, and the case was adjourned to Tuesday.
