Laura Barlett, 44, of Lake Street in Angola, was charged over the weekend with driving while intoxicated but avoided a stolen-car charge after telling police that she took a vehicle that she thought was hers.
About an hour after Evans police broadcast a report of a stolen car from a Grove Street driveway Sunday, Angola Police Officer Dan Bluff observed a car fitting that description on Lake Street.
Police provided this account:
Bluff stopped the vehicle, leading the driver to ask why she had been stopped. The officer told her the car had been reported stolen, and she replied that she realized that it was not her car, because the dashboard was different.
The woman also told police that she had walked over to a friend's house and, after leaving, saw a car in a driveway and thought that it was hers. The keys were in the car, and she drove away. Police also said a similar car was found in her garage.
No charges were filed in connection with the stolen-car report.
