To publicize that women, on average, earn less than men, the Business and Professional Women of Buffalo will hold an "unhappy hour" from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Long Fellows Restaurant, 69 Delaware Ave., Buffalo.
The Erie County Commission on the Status of Women says that women locally earn 69 cents for each $1 a man earns. Nationally, Business and Professional Woman/USA says that women make 76 cents for each $1 a man earns. Both statistics use data from the U.S. Census and do not take into account differences in education, experience or any other factor.
Using these numbers, April is the point in a year a woman must work to earn as much as a man made the previous year. Over a lifetime, that's $523,000 in lost wages, according to Business and Professional Women/USA.
The unhappy hour will cost women $25 and men $35.
