As Erie County comptroller, Nancy Naples took an oath to be responsible for the financial interests of the taxpayers. If one considers her "personal" bookkeeping performance to be indicative of her "public" abilities, one must wonder if she is the root cause of Erie County's fiscal problems.
The public service mind-set of "what do I care, it's not my money" has got to change. We need new, enforceable laws that ordinary citizens can use to hold our elected and appointed officials legally accountable for their incompetence.
Otherwise, I suggest that we privatize all public services so that we can fire incompetent personnel. Privatization of government services will get rid of most political patronage positions, reduce the power of politicians, increase efficiency, lower costs for the taxpayers and promote higher legal and ethical standards.
In particular, bidding out all accounting functions to certified public accounting firms will end the financial shenanigans that we have been suffering under far too long.
