Army Pvt. Dan Shaw of West Seneca has been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered during an insurgent attack in Iraq last month, Assemblyman Mark J.F. Schroeder, D-Buffalo, said.
His mother, Brenda, said he was struck by shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade and wounded in the back of his head. Stationed in Ramadi, west of Baghdad, Shaw returned to duty after a brief hospital stay. He has been in Iraq since Jan. 10.
Schroeder noted that Shaw, who plans to make a career of the Army, failed his military entrance exam twice, but was able to pass on his third try after he earned his GED certificate at the South Buffalo Education Center.
