KYRGYZ PARLIAMENT OKS PRESIDENTIAL RESIGNATION

Kyrgyzstan's parliament accepted the resignation of ousted President Askar Akayev today, ending a debate that has paralyzed the new leadership.

Legislators initially rejected Akayev's April 4 offer to step down, arguing it was too dignified an exit for the disgraced leader.

Akayev, who ruled the former Soviet republic for 14 years, fled the country after opposition supporters stormed his office on March 24.
