Two Thoroughbred racing horses running loose on Netherby Road late Sunday night were struck by a vehicle and killed instantly, Niagara Regional Police reported today.
Police were called at about 11:15 p.m. to Netherby, near House Road, where they determined that the two Thoroughbreds were struck by a westbound vehicle. Following the initial collision, a truck ran over one of the horses that had fallen on the road.
The two horses, 4 and 6 years old, were privately boarded in the Netherby-House area, more than five miles from the Fort Erie Race Track.
The driver of the first vehicle that struck the horses was treated and released from Greater Niagara General Hospital. The truck driver was not injured, police said.
The two horses were valued at $12,000 total, while the two vehicles suffered $30,000 damage.
