RESCHEDULING ALLOWS JEWISH TEAM TO COMPETE

An agreement has been reached to let a Jewish high school participate in a national mock trial competition scheduled for the Jewish Sabbath.

The National Mock Trial organization initially cited logistical difficulties in refusing to change the scheduling of the May 5-7 event to allow the Torah Academy to compete on the final day. More than 40 teams compete in the Charlotte, N.C., tournament.

Under the agreement, the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, which is hosting the event, and the New Jersey Bar Foundation, which sponsors the state-level competition, said Torah Academy would begin competition on a Thursday evening and complete the next two rounds the next day. If the team reaches the finals, that phase would be held after sundown Saturday.

The Jewish Sabbath lasts from twilight Friday until sundown Saturday.
