INMATE KILLED IN FIGHT IN STATE PRISON

A 33-year-old inmate was killed in a fight with another inmate in a cell at Gouverneur Correctional Facility's maximum-security confinement unit, authorities said.

State Police said guards responding to a disturbance found John Pearson of New York City lying in the cell shortly before 4:30 p.m. Thursday. He was taken to E.J. Noble Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy showed he was asphyxiated.

James Davis, 23, of New York City, who was sharing the cell with Pearson, was transferred to Upstate Correctional Facility in Malone. A prison spokeswoman said he faces disciplinary infractions for violent conduct, assault and fighting.
