RAPE SUSPECT NAMED YOUTHFUL OFFENDER

Niagara County Judge Peter L. Broderick Sr. granted Lawrence M. Briggs youthful offender status Thursday, sealing his sentence on a statutory rape charge.

Briggs, 18, a former Town of Lockport resident who now lives in Colorado, had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree rape for having sex with a 14-year-old girl here last June.

In another sex case, Broderick promised a prison term of five to six years for Francis Bald, 49, of Wheatfield Street, North Tonawanda, who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a woman in his home Nov. 27.

Broderick will make it official Aug. 12.

Bald, who admitted to first-degree sexual abuse, was arrested when a neighbor looked out of his home and saw Bald struggling with the woman in the driveway. Bald had chased the woman after she ran from his apartment.
