A memorial service for Catherine M. Gelzer will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Deerhurst Presbyterian Church, 257 Deerhurst Blvd., Town of Tonawanda.
Mrs. Gelzer, 86, died of pneumonia March 25 in Millard Fillmore Hospital. A Town of Tonawanda resident for many years, she had moved into Mary Agnes Manor in Buffalo in 2003.
Born Catherine Millar in Glasgow, Scotland, she immigrated to Buffalo as an infant with her family.
She received the Jesse Ketchum Medal and went on to graduate from Grover Cleveland High School.
She also received the Daughters of the American Revolution Medal and, as a young woman, was an accomplished pianist.
Mrs. Gelzer worked at the Buffalo Broadcasting Co. as a secretary to the program director. There, she met pioneering Buffalo broadcaster Jack Gelzer, whom she married in 1945. He died in 1998.
Survivors include a son, John of Knoxville, Tenn.; three daughters, Joanne Bacher of Bradenton, Fla., Margaret Hancock of Mechanicsville, Md., and Jill Walsh of the Town of Tonawanda; two sisters, Isabelle Tardif of Fort Myers, Fla., and Elizabeth Branch of Kenmore; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
