ON THIS DAY -- In 1818, Congress decided the flag of the United States would consist of 13 red and white stripes and 20 stars, with a new star to be added for every new state in the Union. . . . In 1841, President William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia one month after his inaugural. He was the first president to die in office. . . . In 1902, British financier Cecil Rhodes left $10 million in his will to provide scholarships for Americans at Oxford University. . . . In 1968, civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., 39, was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn. . . .

SPAGHETTI DINNERS will be served from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in Pvt. Leonard Post Jr. Post 6251, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 2450 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga, to raise money for the Pulaski Day Parade on July 17.

Jean Cadwallader, who is chairwoman of the Gen. Pulaski Association of the Niagara Frontier event, said the dinner will cost $6 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12. The event is open to the public, and live music will be provided by Tony Krupski.

Brian Rusk, president of the association, said Cheektowaga Justice Ronald Kmiotek, a director of the association, is honorary chairman of the dinner. For information, call 897-1643. . . .

ROAST PORK dinners will be served from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday in St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church and School, 4169 Church Road, Lockport.

Adults will pay $7.50 for the family-style, all-you-can-eat meals, and children 6 to 12 will be charged $3.50. Kids under 5 eat free. The meal includes roast pork, potatoes and gravy, dressing, green beans, coleslaw, rolls and butter and pies. For information, call 433-9013. . . .

BIG 50 -- Members of the Mount Mercy Academy Class of 1955 are trying to locate nine "missing" classmates to tell them about a reunion planned for June 10. They include Regina Bartkowiak, Mary Jones Donnelly, Rosemary Chmielewski Haas, Joan Wiatrowska Kelly, Carole Wirth Libertore, Catherine Byrne, Sharon Bentz Nassoiy, Kay Bonner Shamp and Diane Chmura Zaidel.

IN KOREA -- Air Force Senior Airman Brent M. Helman, a 2001 graduate of Grand Island Senior High School, has arrived for duty at Osan Air Base, South Korea. He has four years of military service and is an entry controller assigned to the 51st Fighter Wing. His parents are Kenneth Paul and Pamella Helman of Grand Island. His wife, Delene, is the daughter of Darleen Hoover of Grand Island. . . .
