DRIVER KILLED IN CRASH MAY HAVE FALLEN ASLEEP

A town resident may have fallen asleep at the wheel prior to an early morning crash that took his life Sunday, Niagara County sheriff's deputies said.

Francis J. Bogdan, 59, was eastbound on Chestnut Road shortly after 5 a.m. when his 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck struck a guardrail, deputies said.

Bogdan was taken to Newfane Inter-Community Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies said that Bogdan had worked a shift at the Delphi plant and then visited the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls and was headed back home when the accident occurred. An investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing, but deputies said that weather and road conditions were probably not a factor.
