The Bass Pro deal and related infrastructure improvements are just another comically overblown construction project, masquerading as economic development. Bass Pro, like any remotely owned retail operation that fails to live up to its "tourist destination" hype, will actively withdraw wealth from our community. Once again, we, the taxpayers, will have contributed -- literally -- to our own economic deterioration. This community cannot afford to subsidize its own demise. Do our leaders not have any better idea how to improve our economy than these silly and harmful gimmicks? Our elected officials have always been far too eager to spend our money on anything that they think will make them look good. Here's a tip: This one won't.
Yes, our region needs the millions of state and federal dollars earmarked for this ridiculous project, but can't we use it to attract and retain real wealth-creating businesses?
