Let's take a moment, in the midst of all this self-righteous chest beating over the county finally "trimming down" and "cutting pork," to contemplate where some of the alleged savings are coming from. Child support investigators have been laid off. These jobs are almost totally reimbursed by the federal government and investigators bring in more than $1 million a month. This offsets the cost of public assistance, keeping many single parents off the rolls and facilitating the move to self-sufficiency for others. So where are the savings?
County employees (and yes, I used to be one) are not pork. They are not "friends and family." They got their jobs by meeting the educational and/or experience criteria, taking exams and then doing their job well. Many of the now unemployed had at least 20 years on the job.
The deficit was not caused by the employees, but they are being sacrificed. Do people really think a paid lunch and summer hours have anything to do with the mess we are in now? More than a thousand families will find it hard to sleep tonight, with the fear of losing all they've worked for. But rest easy. You saved a penny. You made your point.
