The Forever Elmwood group deserves the support of government officials and the entire community for its farsighted proposal to transform Elmwood Avenue from the Scajaquada to West Delavan into a stunning and user-friendly gateway. If this plan, which includes three roundabouts, is implemented, it will be a tremendous boon to area businesses and cultural organizations.
As a member of the volunteer group that helped convince the State Department of Transportation that four roundabouts and other traffic-calming and walkability solutions would spark a renaissance for the Village of Hamburg's neglected business corridor, I know that Forever Elmwood faces many obstacles. But this opportunity cannot be wasted. Traffic-calming and walkability solutions have been proven successful in improving traffic flow in congested areas, drastically reducing accidents, improving the business climate, raising real-estate values and decreasing vehicle emissions.
The Elmwood gateway is the type of small, grass-roots project that will help bring Buffalo back to its former beauty and prominence one step at a time.
