REPUBLICAN FROM ALFRED IS LEAVING LEGISLATURE

Allegany County Legislator Robert Heineman of Alfred has resigned.

The Republican, who has served in the Legislature since 1995, and was a leader in the successful effort to change legislative pay from per-diem vouchers to annual salaries, gave no reason for his action.

He previously served as Alfred village justice, and teaches political science at Alfred University.

A vacancy can be filled by vote of the Legislature, and both political parties in the district may recommend candidates. The Legislature may choose someone other than one of those prospects.

An appointed member would serve until Jan. 1, since all 15 seats are to be filled in the November elections.
