QUARTER-PERCENT HIKE OK'D IN MORTGAGE TAX

A mortgage tax increase of a quarter of a percent was enacted by a 13-10 vote of the Chautauqua County Legislature on Wednesday.

Beginning May 1, home buyers and anyone wishing to refinance a home in the county will pay a 1.25 percent mortgage tax.

The move is expected to generate $550,000 in revenue this year, and more than $800,000 per year starting in 2006.
