Niagara junior goaltender Jeff Van Nynatten will miss eight weeks because of a finger injury. He was injured in practice Monday and scheduled for surgery Tuesday.
Van Nynatten had a 3-5-0 record, a 3.01 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage for the defending College Hockey America champions, who play a two game series against Alabama-Huntsville on Friday and Saturday in the Von Braun Center.
The Purple Eagles' backup goalies are freshman Scott Mollison and sophomore Allen Barton. Mollison has a 2-1 record with a 1.80 goal-against average and a .929 save percentage. Barton (0-2) has a 5.08 goals-against average and a .855 save percentage.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Daemen won its American Mideast Conference opener, defeating Houghton, 93-73, in Amherst. The Bobcats were led by Darnell Jackson's 19 points. Brian Montanaro had 18. . . . Ben Bellucci scored 36 points in Brockport's 90-71 SUNYAC win at Fredonia. Taha Alassari (Sweet Home) had 15 points for the losers.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Daemen (4-3) opened its American Mideast Conference schedule with an 82-67 victory over visiting Houghton. Jessica Ruddell led the Bobcats with 23 points while Joanna Daugenti and Germany Jackson (Traditional) added 16 points each. . . . Buffalo State (2-2) lost at Ithaca, 71-61. Jacey Brooks led the Bengals with 20 points while Tawan Slaughter (Christian Central) added 10. . . . A three-point basket by sophomore Karolyn Baker (Olean) broke a 61-all tie and sent Fredonia on to a 67-61 win over visiting Brockport. Katie Estes (Olean) led the Blue Devils with 17 points. . . . Amy Anderson (West Seneca) had 13 points in Hilbert's 66-37 loss to RIT.
BASEBALL: Four members of the Western Region's gold medal team at the 2004 Empire State Games will play baseball at the University at Buffalo, coach Bill Breene announced.
The signees include pitcher Daniel Francis (Clarence), outfielder Charlie Karstedt (Eden), outfielder-pitcher James Piazza (Williamsville North) and infielder Jacob Rosenbeck (Medina) from the Western Region team.
Other UB recruits are: second baseman Brad Agustin (Williamsville East), outfielder Trevor Blair (Oneida), Eric Flynn (Niagara Falls) and Steven Geltz (Wilson).
