Octavia G. Smith, a retired nurse at Lake Shore Hospital, Irving, for more than two decades, died Saturday in her Silver Creek home after heart failure. She was 82.
Born Octavia Pritchard in Buffalo, she was one of six children. She graduated from Jamestown School of Practical Nursing.
In 1965, she began as a nurse's aide at Lake Shore Hospital in Irving. The following year, she worked as a licensed practical nurse, a position she held until her retirement in 1988.
For 12 years, she took care of 10 foster children, raising them in her home until 1966.
She was an active member of Christ Chapel Wesleyan Church in Silver Creek since 1950. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, baby-sitting her grandchildren, dining with friends and caring for others.
Her husband of 53 years, Wilford, died in 1994.
Survivors include three sons, James of Canton, Texas, and Earl and Kenneth, both of Silver Creek; two daughters, Shirley Ippolito of Angola and Karen Comello of Silver Creek; three sisters, Ramona Ewing of Bakersfield, Calif., and Glenore Wulf and Roberta Militello, both of Buffalo; a brother, Arthur Titus of Coshocton, Ohio; dear friend, Donald Russell of Silver Creek; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave.
