The Niagara women's basketball team held an eight-point halftime lead over St. Francis (N.Y.) but couldn't withstand an early second-half onslaught and lost, 50-48, at the buzzer Sunday afternoon in a Best Western Roundball Classic consolation game in the USF Dome in Tampa, Fla.
The Purple Eagles shot only 21 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes, but they managed a 24-16 cushion on 15 Terrier turnovers.
St. Francis (2-2) tightened up and went on a 21-7 run over the first nine minutes of the second half.
Niagara didn't buckle. While guard Eva Cunningham (Iroquois), who scored 14 first-half points, struggled with only four more points after intermission, Shaunna Ambrose came off the bench to notch all 15 of her points in the second half.
There were six lead changes and five ties in the final 7:26. Niagara (1-3) tied it on a pair of Chantelle Wilson foul shots with 22 seconds left, but Justine Paxhia hit a jumper as time expired.
In other women's basketball action, Kate Modafferi and Katie Nicholson propelled D'Youville past Polytechnic University, 82-61, in the consolation game of the St. John Fisher Ramada Inn Tournament in Pittsford.
Modafferi recorded game highs with 27 points and six assists. Nicholson added 20 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Spartans (2-3).
MEN'S BASKETBALL: Erie Community College posted a 96-76 victory over Genesee in the consolation game of the Columbus State Holiday Tournament in Ohio. Edmund Rainey (Riverside) had 24 points and 18 rebounds, while Darius Corbett (Traditional) added 20 points and 15 rebounds. ECC moved to 5-2.
