DOG, 5 PUPPIES DIE IN FIREBOMBING OF HOME

A dog and five puppies died this morning after someone firebombed a Gibson Street home while a 42-year-old man slept inside, fire officials said. The man escaped unharmed.

Fire Marshal Edwin Ortiz of the city's Fire Investigation Unit said the man was sleeping inside his home at 173 Gibson St. at about 2:44 a.m. when someone threw an ignited device through his front door. Neighbors reported hearing a loud bang before the fire erupted.

"It's crazy," said Ortiz. "We're trying to determine why someone would want to do something like this. He was trying to save his dogs before he escaped."

Fire officials said the firebomb caused extensive damage to the porch, the front of the living room and a bedroom.

Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the two-story home and $10,000 to the contents.

Fire investigators said they are scouring the home for clues and interviewing the resident in an attempt to find the arsonist.
