John A. "Jack" Maderer, a longtime resident of West Seneca, died on Thanksgiving Day in Buffalo Hospice after a battle with cancer. He was 70.
A 1952 graduate of West Seneca schools, Mr. Maderer played football and ran track before starting his career in the Steamfitters apprentice program right out of high school.
He was elected president for two terms in the 1970s of the Steamfitters Local 395. He served as assistant business agent of the union from 1982 until his retirement in 1994.
His passion for football and his caring for area youth led him to volunteer his time coaching the West Seneca Lions team from 1970 to 1978, many of these years after his own children grew out of the program.
He had a big heart and deep caring for his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years and high school sweetheart, the former Elaine Priore; two daughters, Kathy Rupert of Orchard Park and Carrie Reed of West Seneca; two sons, Clay of Alden and Keith of Orchard Park; and 12 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Hoy Funeral Home, 3855 Seneca St., West Seneca. He will be cremated.
