Riddick Bowe plans to return to the ring in January or February after a shoulder injury forced him to call off a fight this weekend.

The 38-year-old former heavyweight champion was to have fought Kenny Craven in the featured bout on a seven-fight card in Louisville tonight. But Bowe threw out his left shoulder swinging at a sparring partner Monday.

Doctors said he suffered ligament damage, and Bowe said the injury will take six to eight weeks to heal and may require surgery. "It's just a minor setback," Bowe said. "I'm very disappointed. Even now, I want to take the fight. But common sense prevailed."

Bowe (41-1, 33 knockouts) would have made his second ring appearance since his April release after serving 17 months in prison for kidnapping his ex-wife.
