It's not too tough to guess just what former Talking Heads/Modern Lovers keyboardist-guitarist Jerry Harrison heard in the Von Bondies.
The Detroit combo has perfected a blend of Stooges/MC5 attitude with a touch of the British sleaze-rock created and continued by Motorhead, all of which is brought home by the catchy melodies of frontman Jason Stollsteimer -- fully recovered, we hear, from the beating he took a few months back outside a Motor City club at the hands of White Stripes leader Jack White.
Harrison, who has produced Live and a host of other alternative bands, brought the sheen to the Von Bondies full-length debut, "Pawn Shoppe Heart"; Stollsteimer and company brought the hooks. The result is one of the biggest underground rock success stories of the year.
Returning from a recent successful tour of Europe, the band hits the Showplace Theatre, 1063 Grant St., on Sunday evening. The gig kicks off at 6 p.m. with opening sets from Starlight Desperation and the Design. Advance tickets are priced at $12 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 852-5000. Buy them at the Showplace box office on the night of the show for $12. Call 447-1271 for details.
