The author of a Nov. 14 letter claims: "We are being conned into a kind of secular morality that is copied from European culture, which is what we left the Old World to get away from." I respectfully beg to differ. If by "we" he means the first people to arrive here to escape European repression, it wasn't secular morality they were escaping from. It was religious extremists who believed in hanging, burning, torturing and otherwise eliminating nonbelievers.
Religious freedom was written into the Bill of Rights because our forefathers were guarding against the suffering inflicted in the name of a loving God. As our young people die allegedly pursuing freedom overseas, it would be the ultimate irony to have ours taken away by an overzealous government.
