Ferry-Fillmore District Officer Jose Colon suspected he was about to witness a drive-by shooting when he observed a car fly past a stop sign at Dodge Street and Roehrer Avenue Thursday evening.
"They really ran the stop sign and I thought maybe they were on their way to commit a drive-by shooting," said Colon, who chased the car to the parking lot of the Makowski Early Childhood Center off Dodge. With his flashlight trained on the interior of the car, Colon said, "I spotted a large chrome handgun just as the passenger was closing the glove compartment."
He told the passenger, who had his hand on the car door and appeared ready to run, to calm down.
When Colon's backup, Officer Paul Mullen arrived, the officers removed the two teenagers from the car and found two handguns, one of them loaded and stolen, in the glove compartment.
Jeffrey Reed, 19, of the 100 block of Roma Street, the driver, and Terrance Purdue, 18, of the 200 block of Herman Street, were charged with criminal possession of weapons and obstructing government administration.
