Mary Eliza Coleman of Buffalo died Friday in Millard Fillmore Hospital after a long illness. She was 72.
Born Mary Eliza Waiters in Heath Springs, S.C., she relocated to Buffalo in 1949 and took night classes at Kensington High School to become a seamstress.
An employee of Service Systems, she worked at St. Francis Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility for 30 years, retiring in 1997.
Known as Maeliza, she was a longtime member of St. John Baptist Church, its gospel choir and ushers association.
Mrs. Coleman also was a member of the Sunshine Club for 24 years.
Her husband, Joseph, died in 1952.
Survivors include three daughters, Angelet Waiters Hardin, Irene Radford, and Joyce Ann Benjaman Wiggins, all of Buffalo; three sons, Gary W. of Wilmington, N.C., Joseph Jr. of Buffalo, and Wyle Mingo of Maryland; a brother, Johnnie C. Waiters and a sister, Evelyn Lowery, both of Heath Springs, S.C.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. John Baptist Church, 184 Goodell St. Burial will be in Ridge Lawn Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
