A Mass of Christian Burial for Neil T. Merkling, a retired Chevy worker and firefighter, was offered today in St. Barnabas Catholic Church, Depew, after prayers in Pacer Funeral Home, Depew. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.

Mr. Merkling of Cheektowaga died Sunday in Buffalo General Hospital after a brief illness. He was 65.

He retired in 2000 after 30 years with the Buffalo Fire Department, where he served with Engine 32 and Ladder 10. He worked for General Motors from 1959 to 1970.

Born in Buffalo, he graduated in 1957 from McKinley High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1963 to 1968.

A member of St. Barnabas Church, he enjoyed fishing, boating and travel.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Barbara A.; two daughters, Jacqueline Rankin of Clarence and Mary Merkling of St. Augustine, Fla.; a son, Michael of Cheektowaga; his mother, Albertine of Buffalo; and five grandchildren.
