Erie County lawmakers recently failed to override County Executive Joel A. Giambra's veto of a measure that would have tied his hands when hiring lobbyists and outside lawyers.

Giambra said he had no problem giving lawmakers a role in selecting the lobbyists Erie County deploys in Albany but didn't want to seek lawmakers' approval whenever he and County Attorney Frederick Wolf hired outside counsel.

The measure had passed 11-3, an indication there were at least the 10 votes needed for an override. However, Republican Legislators Steven P. McCarville of Orchard Park and Denise Marshall of Lancaster, who had voted for the proposal only after a Republican compromise failed, did not vote to override the veto.
