Gladys L. Hess of Amherst, a former cafeteria monitor in the Sweet Home Central Schools, died Saturday in Sisters Hospital after a brief illness. She was 83.
Born in Eden, the former Gladys Schue was a graduate of Eden High School and was crowned Queen of Eden in 1938.
She worked at Buffalo Arms during World War II and later worked part time as a cafeteria monitor at Maplemere Elementary School for 15 years.
A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Amelia's Church and its Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed crafts, ceramics, bingo and socializing.
Her husband of 53 years, Richard D., died in 1997.
Surviving are two daughters, Marianne Roberts of Kenmore and Linda Bourie of Lockport; a sister, Rosemary Dubois of Hamburg; a grandson; and two great-grandsons.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. Amelia's Catholic Church, Town of Tonawanda. Burial was in Forest Lawn.
