SNOWMOBILE CLUBS SEEK TRAIL MAINTENANCE AID

Cattaraugus County snowmobile clubs have taken on an expanded profile in recent years.

The Snow Bounders Snowmobile Club, which recently celebrated its 35th anniversary, is one of nine snowmobile organizations in the Cattaraugus County Federation of Snowmobile Clubs.

The Snow Bounders, which maintains about 150 miles of funded trails, and more than 10 miles of unfunded trails covering 13 townships in central Cattaraugus County, is currently seeking state funds for trail grooming. Organizers also point to plans for a trail being constructed by the Cattaraugus Local Development Corp. that could also be used for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking.

Thomas Livak, director of Cattaraugus County economic development, planning and tourism, said snowmobilers spend $16 million annually in the county, with "mom and pop" small businesses benefiting the most from their purchases.
