The lead News editorial of Nov. 10 declared that the "United States had no choice but to attack (Fallujah) in force." But there was at least one alternative available.
As reported in the Washington Post on Nov. 6, the influential Association of Muslim Scholars, which has provided much of the leadership for the Sunni resistance movement, offered to cease its opposition to the January elections and encourage participation in them if the Americans would not attack Fallujah and stay within their military bases for the month preceding the elections.
Instead of negotiating to take advantage of the positive aspects of this peace offer, the Americans ignored it and invaded Fallujah. Time will tell whether the invasion was a success or failure, but we already know that it was not correct to say that the "United States had no choice."
