CRASH THAT KILLED 2 MEN IN GAINES TIED TO ALCOHOL

Orleans County sheriff's deputies suspect excessive speed and alcohol played a role in the deaths of two men whose car crashed early Sunday on Route 104.

The driver, James Herman, 33, of Holley, and his passenger, Larry D. Rightmeyer, 36, of Brockport, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies said they were summoned to Route 104, about a half-mile east of Eagle Harbor Road, at about 12:35 a.m., where they discovered a car that had overturned several times, landing on its roof. Investigators said Herman was eastbound on Route 104 when his car veered off the road and hit a culvert, causing it to flip.

Undersheriff Steven D. Smith said Herman's license had been suspended.
