Two Common Council members called on the public Saturday to protest proposed cuts in the city's public housing police force.
University Council Member Bonnie E. Russell and North Council Member Joseph Golombek Jr. held a news conference to suggest the budget cuts could hurt crime-fighting efforts at a time when some violent crimes in the city are on the rise.
Both Russell and Golombek have Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority developments in their districts.
Union officials claim the budget cuts will reduce the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority force from 33 officers to 10 and force Housing Authority officers to stop answering 911 calls.
Authority managers have denied the police department is being dismantled.
