Good times finally rolled for the Erie Community College women's basketball team.
After two years of futility, the Kats broke their 52-game losing streak Friday with a 70-67 victory over visiting Kirtland (Mich.) Community College.
"We finally finished one off," said coach Greg Witkop, whose 1-3 team had not won since Nov. 2, 2002. "All the games we've been in (this year) we've been competitive. We just haven't been able to finish.
"This was a team effort. . . . Everyone stepped up. We've had up days and down days. This week we were pretty focused."
Witkop said ECC trailed by five points with 3:30 left but then got scores from "three or four different girls down the stretch (while) we limited them to one shot and out."
Deneen Flores (Seneca) led the Kats with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Bridget Woods added 13 points and Ashley Andrews contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds. Nia Cooper and Melanie Gawera (Lake Shore) had 10 points each.
ECC doesn't have long to celebrate. The Kats play at Canton (0-2) at 1 p.m. today.
"Hopefully, we can turn it into a winning streak," Witkop said.
