Verizon New York's service quality has improved from the levels that prompted state regulators to slap the company with $55 million in penalties, an audit released Wednesday showed.

The audit ordered by the state Public Service Commission and paid for by Verizon showed improved overall service quality and also made 59 recommendations for ways to further enhance service. A Verizon spokesman said most of the recommendations have already been adopted.

Auditors recommended that Verizon apply more money toward preventative maintenance programs that can identify potential problem areas and work on equipment before it fails.
