Joe M. Davis, of Buffalo, a retired plumber and engineer at the University at Buffalo, died Friday in Erie County Medical Center from heart failure. He was 76.
Born in Lawty, Fla., he earned an engineering and plumbing certificate after high school and came to Buffalo in 1949. He began working on UB's South Campus in engineering and plumbing in 1980. He received an award for his service when he retired in 1993.
Mr. Davis was a deacon in Nazareth Baptist Church.
Surviving are his companion of 20 years, Geraldine Monroe; four sons, Abraham Mumgro, Cecil Peoples, Michael Harris and Kendall Monroe, all of Buffalo; five daughters, Sheila Mitchell of Charlotte, N.C., Diane Coles of Cheektowaga and Linda McBride, Leslie Johnson and Elaine Monroe, all of Buffalo; a brother, Nathaniel of Gainesville, Fla.; three sisters, Utha Mae Johnson of Fayetteville, N.C., Estelle Richardson of Irving, N.J., and Dora Haines of Gainesville; 22 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held today in Brian K. Lewis Funeral Home. Burial was in St. Matthews Cemetery, West Seneca.
