Across the pond ...
Are Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston the latest to plan Eurochildren?
Sadly, yes. Hollywood's golden breeders-to-be have found their dream English home, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. It belongs to their celebrity cooking mate Jamie Oliver, aka the Naked Chef.
After looking at residences in the ancient town of Rye in East Sussex, the Pitts were reportedly delighted when Oliver announced he was quitting his $3 million London home for a house in the country.
Earlier this year, Pitt said he wanted to bring up his children in Europe when his ex-"Friends"-star wife becomes pregnant. "I've always liked England," Pitt has said. "Jen also likes it and Europe, so we'll be looking for a place soon. Europe is a great place for kids to grow up."
Gender bias ...
The attention Renee Zellweger has gotten following her up-and-down weight changes for the "Bridget Jones" movies has left co-star Colin Firth bemused.
"It's not that unusual for actors to alter their appearance to play a part. But I think if I did it, it wouldn't get anywhere near the amount of attention," he told the Boston Herald. "It's absolutely fascinating to people that a woman would dare to do that -- particularly someone who's very attractive and has a Hollywood-based career.
Zellweger packed on the pounds to play the plump British heroine in the 2001 "Bridget Jones's Diary" and again for the sequel, "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," which opens this week.
Vintage Beatles ...
Sunday's American Music Awards will feature stars such as Usher, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani and Rod Stewart, but the most talked-about moment might come from the Beatles.
The show plans to air a 2 1/2 -minute tape from 1964 that was recently discovered. "We've got a wonderful old ... tape that's been lost for 40 years that nobody's seen since it first aired featuring the Beatles singing 'She Loves You' and 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand,'" producer Dick Clark said. "It was an English show that aired here that for some reason or another went into a trunk somewhere."
Implants? Not her ...
Kate Beckinsale has laughed off rumors she's had breast implants, reports Ananova.com.
Magazines and tabloids have jumped on an infamous picture of her in a low-cut top with stretch marks down her cleavage as evidence of a breast job. The press has speculated that she's also had Botox and a face lift.
But the newly wed "Van Helsing" star, 31, told Glamour magazine: "I've not had a breast job. The moment those rumors started was when people saw my stretch marks -- I've got stretch marks everywhere." Beckinsale added that she's a "full-blown hypochondriac" who would be petrified by the idea of having botulism (present in Botox) injected into her face.
And despite the perma-tan and big hair she's sported since moving to Hollywood, she insists appearance "isn't a major priority."
Interesting savant ...
NASA scientists are studying the man who was the basis for Dustin Hoffman's character in the 1988 film "Rain Man," hoping that technology used to study the effects of space travel on the brain will help explain why he's getting smarter as he ages.
Kim Peek, 53, is called a "mega-savant" because he is a genius in about 15 different subjects, from history and literature and geography to numbers, sports, music and dates. But he also is severely limited in other ways, like not being able to find the silverware drawer at home or dressing himself.
Researchers had Peek undergo a series of tests including computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, so they can create a three-dimensional look at his brain structure. The researchers want to compare a series of MRI images taken in 1988.
Richard D. Boyle, director of the California center performing the scans, said Peek not only has unique abilities, but he seems to be getting smarter as he ages.
"The goal is to measure what happens in Kim's brain when he expresses things and when he thinks about them," said his father, Fran.
