WELLSVILLE MAN GETS 20 YEARS TO LIFE IN JAIL

A Wellsville man will spend 20 years to life behind bars for the Jan. 21, 2003, beating and shooting death of an Allegany woman.

W. Joseph Lynch, 33, was sentenced Friday by Allegany County Judge Thomas P. Brownon on his guilty plea to a single count of second-degree murder in the slaying of Tammy Smith, 21, of Allegany.

After killing Lynch, Smith left her body in a snowbank along Brown Road in the Town of Ward. The body wasn't discovered until March 28, when someone walking by spotted it in the melting snow.

Smith, who worked at a smoke shop in Limestone, was reported missing Jan. 30, 2003, and her car was found a week later in a downtown Wellsville parking lot.

District Attorney Terrence M. Parker said the plea satisfied the indictment on two counts of second-degree murder handed up on May 7, 2003. Brown imposed the maximum sentence and added a $210 court assessment.
